When Someone Changes… How I Handled It with Coach Payne

Hey guys, it’s Salish! So, have you ever had a friend who was super cool, but then one day, they just seemed… different? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me today, and let me tell you, it was SO hard to figure out what to do!

The day started pretty normal—I was training with Coach Payne (you know, Mr. “No excuses, Salish!”). He’s always tough, but in a good way, and I’ve learned so much from him.

But today? He was acting weird. Like, really weird. First, he wouldn’t stop bragging about himself. “I’m the best coach ever! No one trains like me!” Uhh… okay? Where did that come from?! Then, he started being super dramatic about every little thing, like when I couldn’t do a flip right away.

At first, I tried to just laugh it off. I mean, everyone has bad days, right? But then I started wondering—what if Coach Payne isn’t the same awesome coach I’ve always known? What if he’s changed for good?! 😳

I had to figure out how to handle this. Do I call him out? Ignore it? Quit gymnastics forever?! (Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic…) Instead, I decided to just talk to him.

Turns out, he was acting this way on purpose! He wanted to see how I would handle someone who wasn’t being their best self. It was a TEST!

And guess what? I passed! 🙌 By staying calm, asking questions, and being patient, I learned that people can act differently sometimes, but it doesn’t mean they’ve completely changed. Everyone has off days, and communication is key.

So, life lesson of the day: If someone you care about seems different, don’t give up on them. Talk it out! Oh, and always be ready for Coach Payne’s surprise lessons. 😅

Xoxo, Salish 💖
